In 1989 he obtained his doctorate with honors with the thesis “Polymerization Shrinkage Stress in Dental Composite Resin Restorations, an in vitro investigation”. In 1998 he started working full-time at the University, from this date until April 1, 2001 he held the position of Director of Care at ACTA (half-time) and was also a scientific assistant at the Department of Dental Materials Sciences at ACTA.

In September 1999 he was appointed by the UvA at ACTA as professor by special appointment of 'Quality of dental materials, instruments and techniques', a chair established by the Dutch Society for the Promotion of Dentistry (NMT, now KNMT). On 1 March 2003, this chair was converted into a full professorship in Dental Materials Sciences.

Since 2015, he has been responsible for the VU-wide policy on internationalization within the VU (dean of internationalisation).

His scientific interest lies on the one hand in the danger of biomaterials used in the human body, varying from dental filling materials, toothpastes to implants and cosmetics, and on the other hand in the regulations in this area (various European Directives).

His most important additional function is membership of the SER committee 'limit values' (since 2015).

JW (Hans) Prakken – Treasurer and dentist

JW (Hans) Prakken (1956) graduated from the University of Groningen in 1980. He is a general practitioner in his group practice in Emmen; a large practice with 25 employees. From his additional position as a hospital dentist, he works in several hospitals. There he is involved, among other things, in the treatment of patients with apnea problems and with special care groups. In addition, Hans Prakken is chairman of the Mondzorg Monitor and a member of the VWS advisory committee for Foreign Qualified Dentists. As for preventive dentistry, after many years of hands-on experience and seeing job-creating repair cycles, he has come to see the importance of prevention and preventing problems even more. Expressions such as “The best filling is no filling”, “The best implant is your own tooth”, “If we are not careful, we will go down with the patient while drilling”, “Unfortunately we too often think that we have to fight caries with the drill” and “We are developing more and more high-tech repair techniques, but caries goes further” etc. are statements that reinforce his focus on a more preventive approach. Hans Prakken is also a member of the Regional Disciplinary Court.

Hans has been a board member of the Ivoren Cross since the end of 2016 and holds the role of treasurer on the board.
