Good teeth are possible

Every set of teeth can remain intact if you carefully brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste and do not eat or drink more than 7 times a day. Try to avoid foods or drinks with sugar as much as possible.

Brushing and brushing your teeth

From the moment the first milk tooth breaks through, you as a parent start brushing that tooth. Some children want to brush their teeth themselves as a toddler or preschooler. Please encourage that! But because children are not yet able to do this on their own, they do need your help! Therefore, brush children's teeth at least once a day until they are about 10 years old. Even after the 10th birthday, it remains important to supervise and discuss brushing teeth.

Plaque Colors

Dental plaque is the transparent, white-yellow layer on the teeth and molars that contains many bacteria that can cause cavities. By applying a dye to the teeth, you can see exactly where bacteria are still present. To minimize the risk of cavities, we would like to remove all dental plaque. Your child demonstrates how to brush their own teeth and then you show them how to imitate your son or daughter's teeth. Some people brush electrically, others with a manual toothbrush.
Bring the child's own toothbrush! If necessary, it is examined how brushing can be improved in the home situation. Also discuss how you can reduce any struggles while brushing your teeth at home. Workable solutions are also sought when adjusting the dietary pattern if necessary.

The dentist or dental hygienist will then show you what your child's teeth look like. Cavities start out as white spots. If you brush it carefully, you can still repair it and ensure that such a starting hole does not get bigger.

The power of brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste

Brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste can be so effective that it is even possible to stop cavities from getting bigger. The dentist or dental hygienist can explain this exactly and tell you at which cavities this is possible. Sometimes it is difficult to clean a hole properly. Then the dentist or dental hygienist can help treat the affected tooth in such a way that it can be properly cleaned again. You are then busy tackling the cause of a cavity (caries) and if successful, a filling can be omitted.

First tooth? To polish!

Start brushing your teeth immediately as soon as the first tooth breaks through. That is usually in the lower jaw. Brush the teeth once a day with a little fluoride toddler toothpaste. Brush up
children from 2 years brush their teeth twice a day with fluoride toddler toothpaste. Brush too
gently transition to the gums.

Switch to adult fluoride toothpaste from age 5. Toothpaste for adults contains more fluoride. You can also use toothpaste marked "child" or "junior." Then look at the age indicated here (for example 5-12 years).

First tooth? To the dentist!

Take your child to the oral care practice after the first tooth breaks through. For example, if you go for a check yourself. Don't you go to the dentist yourself? Then go with your child. Treatments and check-ups are free of charge for children up to the age of 17 without a deductible or a personal contribution.

Healthy food, also healthy for your teeth

In addition to careful brushing of your teeth, it is just as important to pay attention to your child's nutrition. Make sure your child does not eat or drink more than 7 times a day. That is 3x a meal and a maximum of 4x a snack per day, preferably less. Don't let your son or daughter get used to sweets and don't add sugar or honey to food and drinks. Preferably drink tap water. Do you expect problems with this? Discuss this with the dental care provider.

Choose tap water instead of sugary drinks. Soft drinks and fruit drinks also contain acids that damage teeth.
