Nutrition and oral health

Information about nutrition and oral health is often limited to sugars and acids as unfavorable influences and fluoride as beneficial. But calcium, fiber, protein and phosphorus are also important. In addition, nutrition has effects on systemic low-grade inflammation and the immune system, which can influence oral health. In particular, people with limited knowledge, skills, time, money and options find it difficult to choose a healthy diet. How can the dentist help with this?

History and principles of the Nexø Method. Denmark today

We are proud to announce that the founder of Gewoon Gaaf, Jette Christiansen, former dentist and head of the clinic in Nexø, will be the keynote speaker during the Ivory Cross Annual Congress 2024. The caries prevention method Gewoon Gaaf is based on the Nexø method. Nexø is a town in Denmark where individual prevention for children aged 0-18 years has been successfully implemented based on risk assessment.

Presentation of the Prevention Prize 2024

Together with Dental Tribune, we challenged you to describe in 500 words which great prevention initiatives you have developed, in order to compete for the Prevention Prize 2024. We received 19 entries from 14 applicants for this call. One contributor suggested two initiatives and another even five. There were some very nice and creative ideas. The initiatives concern creative information directly at the chair, complete prevention programs and multimedia projects with the use of, for example, video and apps.

The three nominees are now known. read more

The prevention prize is made possible by our partner Colgate.

Speaker Pauline Dekker

Gewoon Gaaf and motivational interviewing cannot exist without each other

Motivating teenagers or anyone else to adopt healthy oral behavior is easier said than done. Pauline Dekker, as a pulmonologist, experienced that delivering the message in a pedantic tone (in her case 'stop smoking') did not have any beneficial effect (except that some patients quickly sought another pulmonologist...)
The tide turned when she came into contact with the motivational interviewing technique; what a relief: no more arguments or fuss in the consulting room and much better results.
During Pauline Dekker's lecture, attention will be paid to motivational interviewing. The participants learn how to motivate patients to healthy oral behavior.
The lecture consists of both a theoretical and practical part. Active input required! Cases are discussed and motivational interviewing is practiced.

How to apply Gewoon Gaaf in children with cavitated caries lesions?

Gewoon Gaaf and individual prevention do not stop when cavities are identified. It is then that preventive guidance is intensified with effective communication and a more detailed explanation of the caries disease. We investigate how underlying causes and behavioral patterns that lead to disease can be changed. At the same time, each affected element is assessed to determine what support is necessary to prevent pain and inflammation. In primary teeth, one can consider the use of the NRCT concept, the ART method and Hall crowns. Plastic restorations are used in permanent teeth. The aim is to prevent over- and under-treatment while halting caries development in the child.

Just Gray Healthy

While 'Giga Cool' or 'Gewoon Gaaf' is now being promoted for the youngest group as the ideal concept for oral care for young people, at the end of this conference I would like to draw attention to the elderly in the nursery of geriatrics with this presentation Just Gray Healthy.

Older people over the age of 70 in particular have an increased risk of being born as a vulnerable patient tomorrow or later in their lives. As oral care professionals, we must learn to understand this transition better and be ready when the oral care plan needs to change from cure to care. In other words, 'Don't Forget the Mouth' in old age and start working on a healthy, life-long gray mouth.
